Graduate Collection - Portfolio
‘Resettlement’
This collection has been inspired by the images produced by the ‘Farm
Security Administration’ and ‘Dorothy Lange’ during America’s great depression.
A time in America in which unemployment was at a incredible high and
money was at an incredible low. Garments were not a luxury but a
necessity and recycling and re-using was the norm. During this time migratory
workers left the cities to find work on farms and with that, suits went
from white collar work wear to blue colour work wear overnight and Sunday
best became Mondays dusty worsts.
The collection reflects the hardships through textile elements and fit.
It takes over sized blocky shapes and hand dyed fabrics to produce garments that
could have be worn and handed down through generations. This concept is one
I believe we have lost in modern fashion and a garment should
be produced to be handed down and treated like an heirloom.
This collection should evoke a feeling of nostalgia and story in a contemporary garment.
The wearer should feel that they are now the next part of this garments story and its
their time to continue it. The garment should feel well loved and cared for and
almost broken in for the wearer, something much like a family heirloom that they want
to continue on and cherish.
